Marshall’s Moment - Do You Believe?
That question brings to mind the movie "Miracle On 34th Street". The story line is proving that there is a Santa Claus. The case ends up in court and Kris Kringle is found to be Santa Claus. Many times throughout the movie people state that they believe in Santa Claus.
What about Jesus? Was he born long ago in a manger in Bethlehem? A similar question was asked by Lee Strobel, a journalist who investigated the identity of the child in the manger in his book The Case For Christmas (a very short book that I would highly recommend reading this Christmas season). All evidence supports the fact that "yes" Jesus was born in that manger many years ago. There is a question as to the time of the year he was born.Theologians have concluded that more than likely he was born in the springtime. Pope Julius I declared December 25 in AD 385 as the day for celebrating Christ's birth to challenge a pagan celebration that was occurring at the same time.
We have commercialized this day to mean more than the birth of Christ.Today, Christmas is associated with Santa Claus, snow, Christmas trees, reindeer and presents. And this is all well and good, but only to the extent that these things don't overpower the true meaning of Christmas.(I wonder how we would have commercialized Christmas if we had actually celebrated it in the spring time? Think about it!)
Take some time this season to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. Jesus, a gift from God, was given to mankind to show us how to live and have a relationship with our Creator. The true meaning of Christmas is that God so loved the world (everyone) that he sent his Son and that if we would only believe in Him (that he was born, that he died, was buried and resurrected) we would be saved and live eternally…not perish. Jesus…our purpose for living…and our hope for a future. The greatest gift we could ever receive is Jesus…Jesus in our hearts. Do you believe? - Marshall
